Plenary Talks

This year we are experimenting with a new plenary format where two distinguished speakers from diverse fields present complementary views of related topics. We will feature the following outstanding speakers.

 

Mon

Yonina Eldar and Robert Heath will present signal-processing and communication perspectives of 5G.

Tue

Nina Balcan and Robert Nowak will provide the "CS" and "EE" views of active learning.

Wed

Stefano Soatto and Martin Wainwright will discuss optimization and info theory in machine learning.

Thu

Rich Baraniuk and Sanjeev Arora will outline algorithmic and probabilistic foundations of deep learning.

Fri

Ramesh Johari and Ari Juels will describe rating and cryptographic frameworks for future commerce.

 

Two Tutorial Thursday

Two tutorials will introduce the audience to important topics that have recently come to the fore.

Hands-on deep learning by Zach Lipton

Bitcoin and blockchains by Lav Varshney

 

Student Presentations

Graduating students and postdocs seeking academic positions will overview their research on Wednesday, and general student posters will be presented on Friday.

 

Social Events

The workshop coincides with the 2018 Winter Olympics, and some social events will be accordingly themed.
