PES & PELS Chapter Meeting - Economics of Rooftop Solar

on July 24, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Speaker Dr. Saeed D. Manshadi
Topic Info With the ever-increasing concerns regarding the carbon footprint of the electricity grid, local and federal policymakers incentivized the integration of renewable energy resources, which led to their tremendous expansion during recent years. Solar rooftops are one of heavily incentivized distributed renewable energy resources, which are the option to consider for many electricity customers. In this talk, we will review the economics of installing solar rooftops given the local electricity rates and continuously declining installment cost. A discussion will be provided to make the best decision regarding the installment of solar rooftops. In addition, the importance of considering a more holistic approach toward the problem, including energy storage devices, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency procedures will be revealed. The economics of the net metering (NEM) programs for customers and utilities will be investigated along with some suggestion to design a more efficient paradigm for grid integration of distributed energy resources. Finally, we will further examine the impact of those solar rooftops on the operation and planning characteristics of the electricity distribution network.
Speaker Bio Prior to joining the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at San Diego State University as an assistant professor, Dr. Manshadi was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California in Riverside, CA. He received a Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX; an M.S. degree from the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York (SUNY), Buffalo, NY; and a B.S. degree from the University of Tehran, in Tehran, Iran (all in electrical engineering). Dr. Manshadi also serves as an editor for IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and as a reviewer for several IEEE Transactions journals including Smart Grid, Sustainable Energy, Power Systems, and Industrial Informatics. His current research interests include smart grids, microgrids, integrating renewable and distributed resources, and power system operation and planning.
