Navigating Automotive LIDAR Technology

on October 22, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM

Speaker Dr. Mial Warren, Trilumina Corp. (Albuquerque, NM)
Topic Info

LIDAR is an optical analog of radar providing high spatial-resolution range information. It is considered by most of the automotive community (with one very outspoken exception) to be an essential part of the sensor suite for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and ultimately, autonomous vehicles. Many competing LIDAR designs are being developed by established companies and by startup ventures. Although there are no standards, the performance and cost expectations for automotive LIDAR are relatively consistent across the automotive industry. Why are there so many different competing designs? We will look at the system requirements and describe how the design options can be organized around a few key technologies. We will also look at the cost and time-to-market implications of these design choices.

Speaker Bio

Mial Warren is a former DMTS at Sandia National Laboratories, where he did research on vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology, diffractive optical element design and fabrication, micro-optical system integration and nanophotonics. He retired from Sandia in 2012 to join a venture-capital funded start-up in Albuquerque, NM. He is currently Vice President of Technology for TriLumina Corporation, where he is leading the development of high-power VCSEL arrays and near-infrared illumination modules for automotive LIDAR and 3D time-of-flight imaging applications.

Location Qualcomm AZ Multipurpose Room A/B (10155 Pacific Heights Blvd, San Diego, CA 92121) Non-Qualcomm attendees: Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to find street parking or in nearby Qualcomm parking structures.
