IEEE Consultants’ Network of San Diego
Topic “Some Origins of AI in San Diego”
Speaker: Tom Bartley
The presentation is a story about a man, his company, and a technology: Dan Greenwood, Netrologic, Neural Networks. From before the time he published an overview of neural networks in 1991 until his death in 2002, Dan was almost fanatical about the various applications of Artificial Neural Networks. He was a researcher’s researcher before Google, personally contacting the scientists who were leaders in their field. After reviewing a list of topics and applications researched by Netrologic 20 years ago, the presenter will share some personal experiences and where it led him. The list of topics includes plants, robotics, manufacturing machines, image compression, space shuttle engine, and more… A brief review of patent strategies will be added on at the end.
After attending Harvey Mudd College for two years Tom proceeded on to Stanford University where he earned bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering. Later he attended San Diego State University Graduate Business School.
His professional career engineering activities included drafting, analog and digital circuit design, instrumentation data collection and recording, flight test instrumentation, deep ocean buoy data collection and telemetry, radar system analysis and performance prediction, image processing work station design, pipeline computer hardware design, artificial neural networks applications, forging press analysis, telemetry computer processing, voice recognition and identification, development of internet telephone networks, ultracapacitor and battery energy storage systems, electric and hydraulic-electric accessories for hybrid and electric heavy duty trucks, semi-trailers, and buses, analysis of the recycling of braking energy for heavy duty trucks, buses, semi-trailers, and trains, and writing patents.
He has held positions of Associate Engineer, Principle Engineer, Senior Scientist, Systems Engineer, Project Manager, Product Manager, Network Director, Marketing Manager, Director of Strategic Development, Vice President, CEO, and Mobile Auto Mechanic. He worked at the Nuclear Test Site for EG&G. He worked on missile guidance, flight test instrumentation, and oceanographic buoy data collection for General Dynamics. He also worked for IBM, Cubic, Amex, SAIC, Loral Instrumentation, Yopop, Netrologic, USATalks.com, ISE Corporation, Transportation Power Inc., Tom Bartley IDEAS, and Proensis dba Hahl Trucking Technologies.
He is an IEEE Senior Life Member, Treasurer for the San Diego Clean Cites Coalition Board of Directors, and has been a member of the Energy and Transportation Policy Committees for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. He is a former Adjunct Professor at the Community College level and has run marathons, done triathlons, was an advanced snow and water skier, swing dancer, trail bike rider, and options trader. He drives a Plug-in Prius and is a grandfather to 4 grandkids.
