Evaluating the Actual Savings Expected from Various Power Quality Solutions
Dear IEEE Members & Friends of the Power and Energy and Power Electronics Societies in the San Diego Area
Continuing our series of talks by subject matter experts on interesting and important subjects to you, we are very privileged to have a presentation by Mr. Dan Carnovale, who is coming all the way from Pittsburgh, PA to give us a talk on the work being done on evaluating the actual savings expected from various Power Quality solutions.
Description: Today, everyone wants to save energy. Originally, Power Quality solutions were sold as an insurance policy to avoid potential damage from power disturbances such as transients, voltage sags, interruptions or harmonics. Now, however, some Power Quality solution providers have found it more effective to promote energy savings associated with their products rather than to deal with the soft savings associated with minimizing downtime or reducing damage to electrical equipment. This allows them to show an easy ROI for their customers. While some of these solutions provide excellent protection, they may only provide very little energy savings. This presentation will discuss some of the work being done to evaluate the actual savings expected from various Power Quality solutions and will give some guidance as to the selection of these solutions based on energy savings.
Bio: Dan Carnovale, PE/CEM is the Power Systems Experience Center Manager for Eaton's Electrical Group. Dan has developed Eaton's Power Systems Experience Center www.eaton.com/experience where PQ problems are created and mitigated for demonstration and testing purposes. He has developed and teaches CEU certified technical seminars on Power Systems and Power System Analysis and he has conducted several hundred Power Quality site investigations for commercial, industrial and utility power systems: evaluating PQ issues and applying solutions.
Prior to Eaton, Dan worked for Westinghouse Engineering Services and ABB Power T&D where he performed Power Quality field investigations and electrical distribution system analysis.
Dan received his B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Gannon University in Erie, PA, his M.S. Degree in Power Systems from Rensselaer Polytechnic University in Troy, NY and an MBA from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Pennsylvania, California and Alaska, a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and a Senior Member of IEEE.
